Objective
To regulate the entire lifecycle of pesticides including manufacturing /formulation, importation, registration, sales and distribution, use, transportation and disposal thereby ensuring that pesticides are effective to the intended uses and cause minimum risks to human health and to the environment.
This Unit perform the following activities:- Evaluate technical information, labels for safe use instructions submitted by registrants to ensure safety to human and animal health and the natural environment; Coordinate bio-efficacy testing of pesticides to their intended purposes (for the control of pests/diseases, etc.) under local geographical conditions Approve, endorse and officially publish pesticides in the gazette for public access and use under existing legal committees and procedures Continuous evaluation use practices and re – evaluation of potentially adverse effects to people and the environment Examine and certify individuals and pesticide business community; Undertake tracking and surveillance of pesticides in the marketplaces to ensure that they meet health and environmental standards; Carry out field inspection for individuals and pesticides business community for law compliance and enforcement and Carryout training and outreach programs to handlers of pesticides and other stakeholders for legal compliance; Ensure that pesticide are professionally handled thereby reducing risks to human and the environment; and Track compliance on pesticides labeling requirement on the market for safe use of pesticides by handlers and others
